Question

How do progressive Christians celebrate Christmas?

Answer

Thanks, Mary! Progressive Christians generally celebrate Christmas in many of the same ways as conservative Christians—we retell the story of Christmas, sing the carols, light the trees, and gather with loved ones as we reflect on the belief that God is never far from us.

The difference is that many progressive Christians also uplift unique aspects of the Christmas story, exploring hidden narratives that are incredibly relevant to our modern world but are often overlooked by more conservative interpretations. For example: Jesus and his family as refugees in Egypt, the interfaith, socioeconomic, and intercultural implications of the visits of the Magi from the East and the shepherds, and the many marginalized voices present in the story. There are dozens of other characters and perspectives tucked into the two short nativity narratives that open space for deep reflection on how we love our neighbors and advocate for justice today.

Progressive Christians also are not afraid to wrestle honestly with the history of the Christmas stories. Scholarship suggests that these narratives are almost certainly theological and mythic in nature—but that does not detract from their profound message or the sense of wonder and awe they can still evoke in our hearts. What matters most, I think, is that progressive Christians try not to overthink Christmas, but instead allow ourselves to be caught up in the mystery and majesty of this story, this season, and this celebration. If we can do that, we can recover the wonder and awe that Christmas holds for billions of people around the world.

Merry Christmas!
